June 14 Fishing Report

What an awesome week of fishing. The puppy drum (redfish) bit so well this week. We had some explosive strikes on topwaters. We also landed fish on spinnerbaits and live baits. Most of the fish were found in the marshes and backwaters of Swansboro. The speckled trout bite was really good this week with a few citation size fish mixed in with 2-3 lb fish. All the trout were caught on live baits. The flounder bite has slowed a bit but we are still finding a few nice keepers each trip. The good news also is the big row spanish have shown up on all the nearshore structure. These fish have been smashing small livebaits on top. June 7 Fishing Report

The Red Drum (Redfish) bite has heated back up. We had some really good mornings this week especially around the high tides. We have been finding plenty of upper slot fish in the marshes. Not really finding big schools of fish but schools of 10-50 scattered throughout our area. Most of these fish have been falling for fresh cut menhaden or live shrimp. We have also landed a few on topwaters.

The flounder bite has cooled some but we are still catching a few keepers each trip. Most keeper fish have been staging around structure such as rocks and docks along the ICW. The bait of choice has been live mud minnows or smaller menhaden. We have also landed some nice speckled trout in these areas most fish have been in the 1-4 lb range.

The ocean has been pretty rough lately so I have not been able to get out to fish the ocean but I have heard from bigger boats there are tons of Amberjacks out there. Also there have still been some cobia landed close the the inlets. The big news is the Mahi-Mahi are moving closer with this southerly wind so when the wind calms I expect a good dolphin bite close to the beach. King Mackerel should be inching closer as well. The Spanish mackerel bite has still been pretty good along the beach front. The bigger Spanish should be here to along our near shore structure.

Memorial Day Fishing Report

Red Drum have bit well this week even with all the boat traffic we found plenty of slot size fish in the Swansboro backwaters. Most fish were landed on cut bait but we manged a few on topwaters and scented soft plastics. The flounder bite was still pretty good around all the inlet mouths and also along all the docks and structure in the ICW. Flounder have fallen for live mud minnows on carolina rigs and scented softplastics on jigheads. I did run 1 cobia trip with the weather being bad and we lost one nice fish and that was it. There are still plenty of Cobia around we just have to be able to get out on them. The Fishing is awesome

The fishing has been nothing short of awesome lately folks. The Cobia fishing has been unbelievable at Cape Lookout and It should start to really heat up here out of Bouge inlet any day now. There have been some reports of king mackerel closer to the beach and I expect it will not be to long before they are at the near shore wrecks and live bottoms. The Spanish bite has been a little spotty but continues to improve with every day that goes by.

Now for the inshore species. The puppy drum (Redfish) bite seems to have cooled a little bit but we are still finding good numbers of fish in the backwaters behind the barrier islands and inside the creek mouths. We have been landing these fish on the normal topwaters and soft plastics along with live bait. Most of these fish are ranging from 22"-25" with the occasional upper to over slot fish.

We have also been landing some pretty speckled trout the last couple of weeks. I was a little concerned that we were not finding the typical spring bite but they have showed themselves the last couple of weeks. We have been finding fish in the 1-2lb range with some 3-4lb fish mixed in. The specks have been falling for topwaters before the sun rises and then we have been switching over to soft plastics and live bait.

The best news so far this late spring is the flounder. We have been having some of the best flounder fishing I have seen in years. We are landing good numbers of keeper size fish ranging from 15"-20". I have not seen a citation size fish yet but with the numbers of fish around I expect it to be soon. The flounder have been falling for live mullets and mud minnows on carolina rigs.

Drum are Everywhere

Well the spring has started off strong. The warming water temps and abundance of baitfish have pushed huge schools of Red Drum (Redfish) into our backwaters and they have been eager to feed. We have been finding schools of fish in all the bays and creeks behind all the barrier islands. The good news is these fish are smashing topwater baits. The action should only improve as we work into the summer. There also has been some good reports of flounder in our area. We have landed a few keepers and throwbacks over the last couple of weeks and I expect the flounder bite to pick up as we start the month of May. Speckled trout have been a little bit tough to find in the Swansboro area. But I have talked to a few folks who have had some good numbers of solid fish in the New River. May will be the month to target trophy class specks in the New and Neuse Rivers. Spring Fever

Hello folks I hope everyone had a wonderful winter. I know it was a pretty cold here on the crystal coast. But the air and water temperatures have been rising quickly. I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know whats going on right now in our area. The Red Drum (redfish) have started to filter in the inlets we have been finding good schools of fish in the backwaters behind the barrier islands along with the North River. We have been landing most of these fish on gulp baits and spinner baits. I suspect it will not be long before they start smashin topwaters. There have been some trout around but they have been on the small side. With the warming water temps the trout bite in the New and Neuse river will improve. April and May are two of my favorite months to land trophy size speckled trout. The striped bass bite has been really good all winter long. There have been good numbers of fish in the Neuse river. They have been falling for topwaters in the mornings and suspending twich baits in the afternoons. I expect the bonito bite with start up really soon as the water temps continue to rise. April is also the month we start landing flounder on our nearshore structure. Winter Time Mixed Bag

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Winter time has always been one of my favorite times of year to fish. A lot of people think that fishing in Eastern NC is a warm weather event but there is always some good fishing going on year around. Some of the best Redfishing is on tap during the months of Nov.-March. We typically have schools of 100-1000 reds cruising the crystal clear surf zones of the barrier islands. These fish are easily picked off using softplastics and on the warmer days topwaters. But if fishing in the surf is not your cup of tea well there will be plenty of schools of fish in the backwaters also. Some of the schools of Redfish will filter back into the flats behind the barrier islands. This type of fishing is super exciting while sight casting to 100-300 fish in 8-10" of water.

Also available during the winter months is trophy speckled trout fishing in the Neuse and New Rivers. You can expect to land good numbers of specks with the chance at the once in a lifetime trophy of 6-10 lb fish. Most of these fish are caught using scented softplastics on ligh jigheads and also the Mirrolure MR17 and MR27. The Rivers are not the only specks available through the winter months. We will be running charters to the famous Cape Lookout Rock Jetties. Usually we will be using live shrimp or mud minnows and you can expect to land big numbers of fish ranging from 1lb - 2lbs. This is a fast action fishing and a great way to take a few fish home for the freezer.

My favorite type of winter fishing in for striped bass in the Neuse River. The reason it is my favorite is you will typically land stripers, redfish, flounder, speckled trout, and large mouth bass. This is a great way to spend a cool winter day casting to the banks of the river waiting to feel that strike and not know what you will catch.
